Infrastructure agency to pitch in to help move along Via Rail project

first_imgOTTAWA — A federal infrastructure financing agency is going to put some money behind a few final, financially risky steps in Via Rail’s high-frequency rail project, sources say.Two sources speaking on condition of anonymity because the details are not yet public say the Canada Infrastructure Bank will cover the financial risk for the last few studies and other requirements. The sources didn’t say how much money will be provided or what would specifically be funded, but the agency’s backing could help Via more easily find a private partner to cover the cost of the proposal.Announcements are promised Tuesday in Trois-Rivieres, Que., with Transport Minister Marc Garneau and Infrastructure Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, and also in Peterborough, Ont., with Gender Equality Minister Maryam Monsef, the local MP.The rail company wants to build a multibillion-dollar new network of dedicated passenger-rail lines in Ontario and Quebec, so its trains will no longer have to yield to freight trains on borrowed tracks.Transport Canada has been looking over the Via proposal for more than a year. The Canadian Presslast_img read more

Fashion Icon Twiggy Tells Fashion Week To Reject Real Fur

first_imgIconic British fashion model Twiggy has joined Animal Defenders International’s (ADI) Fur Stop campaign to highlight the cruelty of fur paraded on British catwalks during London Fashion Week.Twiggy said, “Fur looks beautiful on animals, but very ugly on humans. Fur is literally ripped off animals backs and it can take many animals to make just one coat. The UK prides itself as a nation of animal lovers, so I am asking London Fashion Week to make an ethical choice and reject real fur.”Around 50 million animals are killed around the world each year for their fur. Whilst fur farming is banned in the UK, the rising fur trend has fuelled UK demand. Over 40% of fur sold in the UK is from Finland, where ADI went undercover to reveal video and photographic evidence of the horrific conditions and cruelty on certified fur farms for ADI’s fur report ‘Bloody Harvest’.ADI Chief Executive, Jan Creamer, “I am so disappointed to see fur on catwalks at London Fashion Week. ADI investigations have revealed the horrific conditions endured by animals during fur farming, a practice which is banned in the UK. It is unacceptable for London Fashion Week to continue ignoring the suffering which is so callously paraded on its catwalks. It is high time for London Fashion Week to take responsibility and stop allowing designs made from animal fur.”ADI’s undercover fur farm investigators found: animals with open and infected wounds; obvious signs of untreated infection; eyes infected or missing; tails bitten off; deformed and damaged legs; overgrowing gum disease resulting in difficulty eating and drinking; babies with legs stuck through the mesh floor of the cage; dilapidated and dangerous caging and facilities; widespread animal suffering and neglect; empty, dirty and broken water bowls.Fur Stop supporter Alesha Dixon says, “I think killing animals to steal their fur is not only unnecessary but cruel and goes against everything I believe in. There are so many beautiful fake fur products on the market, why do we need to make poor innocent creatures suffer in the name of vanity? I fully support ADI’s Bloody Harvest report in their quest to wipe out these acts of cruelty!”With the increase of fur on the catwalk this London Fashion Week, many celebrities are denouncing the use of fur. Additional supporters of Animal Defenders International’s Fur Stop campaign include: Stella McCartney, Mary McCartney, Brian Blessed, Meg Mathews, Ricky Gervais, Samantha Womack, Jenni Falconer and Belinda Carlisle. With offices in London, Los Angeles and Bogota, Animal Defenders International campaigns across the globe on animals in entertainment, providing technical advice to governments, securing progressive animal protection legislation, drafting regulations and rescuing animals in distress. ADI has a worldwide reputation for providing video and photographic evidence exposing the behind-the-scenes suffering in industry and supporting this evidence with scientific research on captive wildlife and transport. ADI rescues animals all over the world, educates the public on animals and environmental issues. For more information on how you can help, visit www.ad-international.org.last_img read more

Giving Greek breast cancer patients a voice

first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram A cure for secondary breast cancer – otherwise know as metastatic or advanced – has not yet been found, but recent advances in treatment show it can be controlled.Secondary breast cancer develops when cells from the original cancer in the breast travel to other parts of the body through the blood or lymphatic system and develop into a new cancer. This new cancer is still known as breast cancer even though it is in a different part of the body.Treatments are continually improving and women often live for many years, however, expenses and complex procedures can take their toll on the patients, their families and their carers.A significant percentage of breast cancer patients in Australia is of migrant background in which case, language can be a problem, researcher Spiri Tsintziras notes. For this reason Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) plans to develop resources translated into Greek and Chinese for women affected by secondary breast cancer and their families. To ensure the information is relevant and culturally appropriate, BCNA is conducting focus groups at the Australian Greek Welfare Society with female patients and their support persons. “I am helping BCNA create information for Greek women with secondary breast cancer, whose breast cancer has spread to other parts of the body,” Mrs Tsintziras tells Neos Kosmos.“As you may know, this is a very difficult subject for our community to talk about, and there is no information at all for this group.”This focus group is part of a research study conducted by the Cancer Network in collaboration with the University of Sydney in order to determine the needs of secondary cancer victims. “We want to learn from the patients’ experience and gather information to support Greek people affected by secondary breast cancer in the future,” she explains.“Essentially we bring women together to talk about their predicament so we can identify what sort of support they need.”BCNA conducted a similar survey with women of ethnic background two years ago, creating resources and support groups for patients at the early stages of cancer. Similarly, the Network wishes to create resources for women with more progressed stages of cancer.“Research focus groups are important for the women who are currently suffering but also for the women who might find themselves in the same predicament down the track.“We want to bring these people and their carers together at the table and come up with effective action plans to help them get through this journey,” Mrs Tsintziras continues. “We need all the support and information we can get from the Greek community.”The focus groups are an ongoing program of the BCNA. Information and support is also available via phone. Scientists Develop Sniff Test For Movie Ratings

first_imgStay on target The MPAA’s long-held tradition of movie ratings—from G to NC-17—are ultimately based on subjective judgments.A film suitable for general audiences, for instance, contains nothing, “in the view of the Rating Board,” that would offend parents with young children. Why leave these decisions up to humans, though, when we can rely instead of the cold, hard facts of science?Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry found that the concentration of isoprene in cinema air correlates with the industry’s ratings system. The organic compound is formed by metabolic processes and stored in muscle tissue; it gets released via the circulatory system, expired air, and the skin whenever we move.“Evidently, we involuntarily squirm back and forth on our cinema seat or tense our muscles when we become nervous or excited,” group leader Jonathan Williams said in a statement. To test this theory, Max Planck analysts connected a mass spectrometer to their chosen cinema’s ventilation system.Over 135 screenings of 11 different movies to more than 13,000 audience members, the device measured composition of air and levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) once every 30 seconds. The team analyzed concentrations of 60 compounds, then created a model to compare the age classification with data on how often and in what quantities the audience released those compounds.Across genre and age group, isoprene levels reliably matched films’ existing classification.“Isoprene appears to be a good indicator of emotional tension within a group,” according to Williams. “Our approach could therefore provide an objective criterion for deciding how movies should be classified.”Moving forward, Williams plans to investigate whether VOCs we emit expose other sentiments; whether specific emotions leave traces in the air.More scientific coverage on Geek.com:People are More Honest When Speaking a Foreign LanguageScientists Accidentally Usher in New Era of ‘Green Chemistry’You Smell Like Trash, May I Take You Out? White House will not release bin Laden death photo

first_imgWASHINGTON — President Barack Obama ordered grisly photographs of a dead Osama bin Laden sealed from public view on Wednesday, declaring, “We don’t need to spike the football” in triumph after this week’s daring middle-of-the-night raid. The terrorist leader was killed by American commandos who burst into his room and feared he was reaching for a nearby weapon, U.S. officials said.Several weapons were found in the room where the terror chief died, including AK-47 assault rifles and sidearms, the officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity as they offered the most recent in a series of increasingly detailed and sometimes-shifting accounts of bin Laden’s final minutes after a decade on the run.Obama said releasing the photographs taken by the Navy SEAL raiders was “not who we are” as a country. Though some may deny his death, “the fact of the matter is you will not see bin Laden walking this earth again,” the president said in an interview taped for CBS’ “60 Minutes.”He said any release of the photos could become a propaganda tool for bin Laden’s adherents eager to incite violence.White House press secretary Jay Carney said the president’s decision applied to photographs of bin Laden, reported to show a portion of his skull blown away from a gunshot wound to the area of his left eye, as well as to a video recording of his burial several hours later in the North Arabian Sea.The president made no public remarks during the day about the raid, apart from the taped interview. But he arranged a visit for Thursday to Ground Zero in Manhattan, where the World Trade Center twin towers once stood.last_img read more

Ban on facial recognition tech up for vote in San Francisco

first_img Post a comment San Francisco could soon become the first city in the US to ban the use of facial recognition technologies by city agencies. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors rules committee on Monday unanimously approved the “Stop Secret Surveillance Ordinance,” which would require supervisors’ approval before agencies — including the police department — could use public funds on the technology. The ordinance faces a final vote before the full Board of Supervisors on May 14.The proposal is intended to combat an emerging technology that some believe contributes to the creation of a state where all people are under constant government surveillance, according to Supervisor Aaron Peskin, who introduced the ordinance in January.”Good policing does not mean living in a police state,” Peskin said in a tweet. “Living in safe and secure communities does not mean living in a surveillance state.”Facial-recognition technology is commonly used for everyday tasks such as like unlocking phones and tagging friends on social media, but privacy concerns persist. Advances in artificial intelligence and the proliferation of cameras have made it increasingly easy to watch and track what individuals are doing. Law enforcement agencies frequently rely on technology to help with investigations, but the software isn’t without its flaws. Last year, the ACLU revealed that Amazon was selling its facial recognition technology, Rekognition, to law enforcement agencies in the US, including the Orlando Police Department. An ACLU test of Rekognition in July found that the system mistakenly confused 28 congressmen with known criminals.”The propensity for facial recognition technology to endanger civil rights and civil liberties substantially outweighs its purported benefits,” the proposed ordinance reads. “And the technology will exacerbate racial injustice and threaten our ability to live free of continuous government monitoring.”The concern has gained traction in the Bay Area, which is home to Silicon Valley. The Public Safety Committee in the neighboring city of Oakland is set to consider a similar bar later this month. BNP blasts AL for bad campaign over student movement

first_imgBNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. Prothom Alo File PhotoThe opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Wednesday alleged that the ruling party has resorted to propaganda and rumours to hide the repressive acts against demonstrating students seeking road safety.BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the allegation while speaking at a press conference at the party’s Naya Paltan central office in the capital, news agency UNB reports.”Obaidul Quader and his party colleagues are making confusing remarks and resorting to rumours to hide repressive acts against students in a superficial way,” he said.Rizvi said the ruling party leaders have also indulged in a foul campaign against the BNP using the media they own. “They’ve resorted to evil tactics to involve the BNP with the student movement.”He said the Daily Janakantha published a photograph on 6 August with a caption how ‘Chhatra Dal activist indulged in violence during the student movement’.”But it’s a photograph of Chhatra League’s intra-party clash which was published in another Bangla daily Bhorer Kagoj six years back on 25 January 2012. The government’s propaganda machine is working round the clock to spread slander against the BNP leaders and activists to confuse people,” he added. The BNP leader alleged that the Daily Janakantha spread the rumour against the BNP being instigated by the government. “We condemn it.”Rizvi said people saw how 22 private university students were taken on remand by tying their backs with a rope on Tuesday. “It’s tantamount to lashing rope in the backs in the entire student community. It’s shameful for the nation and people are denouncing it watching the footage.”He also said it is one of the worst examples of the government’s brutal act to suppress the students’ justified movement and hang onto power. The BNP leader demanded the government immediately release the private university students.last_img read more

The Key Texans In Congress To Watch In The Trump Era

first_imgBut that’s not why Hensarling is standing on such a influential perch. It’s always nice to be a chairman, especially overseeing a committee as powerful as the House Financial Services Committee.  Years ago, Hensarling formed a friendship tri-fecta with two other up-and-coming House members: future U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan and future Vice President-elect Mike Pence. Hensarling is under consideration to serve as U.S. Secretary of Treasury. But even if Trump goes another direction, Hensarling will likely find his calls promptly returned from two of the most powerful people in the U.S. government.U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz  Erich Schlegel/Texas TribuneGiven last summer’s panned speech at the Republican National Convention and his months of pained dealings with the president-elect, Cruz is politically weakened. Official House Portraits via Texas TribuneL.-R., top row: U.S. Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, U.S. Reps. Kay Granger, R-Fort Worth, Kevin Brady R-The Woodlands. L.-R., bottom row: U.S. Reps. Jeb Hensarling, R-Dallas, Lamar Smith, R-San Antonio and Michael McCaul, R-Austin.Come January, the Donald Trump administration will lend outsized power to seven Texas Republicans in the nation’s capital. For years, these GOP members built up seniority on Capitol Hill, but often found their legislative efforts stymied by President Obama’s veto pen. Houston Public Media’s Coverage of Election 2016With Trump’s ideology continuing to shift, it is unclear whether he and these Texas Republicans will be able to work in concert as they all hope. But a GOP-controlled Congress and White House presents their best shot at passing generationally consequential legislation like repealing President Obama’s health care law, building a border wall with Mexico and revamping the tax code, Medicare and Medicaid.Had Hillary Clinton won the presidency, some Texas Democrats would have been on the ascent, namely U.S. Reps. Joaquin Castro of San Antonio, his twin brother, outgoing Housing and Urban Development Secretary Joaquin Castro, and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Houston.  But without Clinton in the Oval Office, Democrats lost their fallback power for halting GOP legislation – a presidential veto. That leaves Democrats at their weakest point in over ten years. Therefore, no Democrats are on this list. U.S. Sen. John Cornyn  Bob Daemmrich/Texas TribuneThere will be no Texan with a more pivotal role in the U.S. government than the state’s senior senator. House Republicans are expected to roll Democrats with waves of legislation repealing President Obama’s policy successes. But the Senate’s rules, which empower the minority party, are expected to be where the legislation slows down. Which is where Cornyn comes in. As the Senate majority whip, Cornyn will not just twist arms and keep Republicans in line. As the former chief of the Senate GOP campaign arm, he is likely to hover over Democratic senators up for re-election in Trump-friendly states, pressuring them to vote for Republican policies. U.S. Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Dallas  Share And a Trump presidency is new terrain for Cruz: He will not have the Obama administration as a political foil. And with Trump in Washington, D.C., Cruz will not be the most bombastic voice in a thousand-mile radius.  But even Cruz’s detractors concede he is wily and tactical, and most assume he will find a way to recover his relevance. He currently chairs two subcommittees, and convened dramatic hearings this fall on issues like internet sovereignty.  While Trump passed over Cruz for U.S. attorney general, plenty of Republicans are openly lobbying Trump to nominate his former rival for the presidency to the U.S. Supreme Court. Such a nod would take Cruz out of the political ring, but would put him in one of the most powerful positions in the country for the rest of his life.  Given his unpopularity in the Senate, he could fly through confirmation – if only to move him out of the chamber. But if that does not come to pass either, his 2018 Senate re-election race is already the most fascinating topic of conversation in state politics.  U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Austin  Bob Daemmrich/Texas TribuneNext to Cruz, there is no Texas politician more closely watched right now than McCaul.  He could end up in the Trump cabinet as Secretary of Homeland Security; he could challenge Cruz in the 2018 Senate primary. Or, he could continue as the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee until 2019, when he will hit term limits on the position under House GOP rules.Currently, those close to the border policy debate say they have no sense on how Trump will move forward on a wall. Will he continue to push for a literal wall or move toward more mainstream concepts like boosting fencing and border security technology?Whether as a cabinet official or House chairman, McCaul will be at the center of implementing that unclear vision. Should McCaul challenge Cruz, it will likely be a knife fight that will consume the state’s political class and donors. U.S. Rep. Kay Granger, R-Fort Worth FacebookThe lone woman in the Texas GOP delegation spent years consolidating her power on the House Appropriations Committee, and she will spend her next term atop a powerful Appropriations subcommittee, a status known in Washington as “a cardinal.” But her time as the senior Texas Republican on the committee could prove dicey. Trump’s campaign proposals feature a series of controversial legislative initiatives that will need to be funded, which is where the Appropriations Committee comes in. Some on Capitol Hill are expecting that committee is where horns lock between the legislative and executive branches. Looking to the future, Granger could be well-positioned to become the full committee’s chairwoman during a theoretical Trump second term. U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady, R-The Woodlands Allison Shelley/Texas TribuneIn some ways, the Trump victory killed the biggest policy initiative on Brady’s plate as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee: the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal.  The Rust Belt, packed with voters against the deal, proved this presidential election to be the most consequential voting bloc. The trade deal was already on shaky ground but those results, and Trump’s outspoken opposition to TPP, effectively finished it off as a lame duck prospect. All that aside, any of the GOP attempts to reform the tax code, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security will cross through Brady’s tax-writing committee. U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-San Antonio  Ryan J. Reilly / Todd WisemanThere are not many policy areas where Republicans are more eager to deregulate than on the environment, and much of that will run through Smith’s jurisdiction as chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee. But also, Smith may be poised to serve as a committee chairman for the rest of his career, despite term limits on committee chairs in House GOP rules. Smith is currently the second-ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee. He could shift to that gavel if McCaul is elevated to the Cabinet, or succeed to that chairmanship in 2019 when McCaul is set to be term-limited.Read more about Cruz and Trump here:Trump bypassed Cruz for the position of U.S. attorney general. Cruz fueled speculation on cabinet position with surprise Trump meeting. Cruz endorsed Trump after months of withholding his support from the Republican presidential nominee who defeated him in the primaries. This article originally appeared in The Texas Tribune at https://www.texastribune.org/2016/11/24/washington-texans-watch-trump-era/.last_img read more

Mice Levitated for Space Research

first_img Citation: Mice Levitated for Space Research (2009, September 11) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2009-09-mice-levitated-space.html (PhysOrg.com) — Scientists have managed to levitate young mice in research carried out for NASA. Levitated mice may help research on bone density loss during long exposures to low gravity, such as in space travel and missions to other planets. This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. Explore further The researchers worked from a number of laboratories around the U.S., including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California and the University of Missouri. The research was done on behalf of NASA, and was published in the online journal Advances in Space Research on 6 September 2009.The scientists built a variable gravity simulator consisting of a superconducting magnet that could generate a magnetic field strong enough to levitate the water inside every cell in the mouse’s body. Water is weakly diamagnetic, which means that in the presence of a strong magnetic field the electrons in water rearrange orbit slightly, creating tiny currents in opposition to the external magnetic field. If the external magnet is strong enough, the diamagnetic repulsion of the water in the mouse tissue is enough to exactly balance the force of gravity on the body.Scientists have previously levitated live grasshoppers and frogs, but this is the first time a mammal has been levitated. The mice were confined to a plastic cage, which had a base with holes to allow waste to be removed, and an open top to allow in air, food, water, and to allow the proceedings to be filmed. The cage was not necessary for the levitation, but it did allow the scientists to compare the levitated mice with non-levitated subjects in identical cages. The first subject to be levitated was just three weeks old. The tiny mouse was disturbed and disoriented and began to spin when it kicked out as though trying to find something to hold on to. With no friction to stop the spinning, the mouse became even more disoriented, according to Jet Propulsion Lab physicist Yuanming Liu.The next young mouse was mildly sedated before being levitated, and it was less agitated by the experience. The levitation experiments were repeated a number of times, and showed that the mice quickly adjusted to the conditions, even eating and drinking normally after a few hours of levitation. Even without sedation, the mice became quite comfortable floating in zero gravity. The powerful magnetic field seemed to have no short term effects on the mice, and earlier studies on rats showed there were no ill effects even after 10 weeks’ exposure to strong magnetic fields. The researchers are now applying for research funding that will allow them to study the physiological effects of prolonged exposure to microgravity, and to try to develop countermeasures that astronauts could adopt.More information: Magnetic levitation of large water droplets and mice; Yuanming Liua, Da-Ming Zhub, Donald M. Queenstown Rafting is New Zealand’s largest white water rafting operator, Kiwi Discovery is one of the best known ski, sightseeing and adventure activity operators and Go Orange offers cruising and kayaking in Milford and Doubtful Sounds, as well as cycling in Fiordland National Park. With around a hundred staff, the newly merged Go Orange will start on May 1st offering rafting, kayaking, cruising, cycling, ski and track transport and a range of coach connections in the region.“The combined strengths of these three Real Journeys owned companies will give us a sharper focus, provide a greater range of options for visitors and enable the new Go Orange to build on its reputation as an active, fun, innovative, value brand,” says Real Journeys Chief Executive Richard Lauder. The merger, which follows extensive consultation, was announced to staff last week and some of the key appointments have now been confirmed. All existing staff have been offered new roles in the merged company or within the wider Real Journeys Group. There have been no redundancies, and a number of new jobs have been advertised.“This is an exciting development for us – the merger will enable us to create two very distinct tourism brands.
